Prices

Volunteer Programme Fees

The following prices are effective as of 1st September 2010

All prices are quoted in US Dollars.  Price includes accommodation and 3 meals per day served at the main house.

As a non-profit organization, our weekly charges are significantly lower than most volunteer organisations. This is because many need to keep the greater part of their fee to cover their own expenses. On the other hand, if you are in direct contact with a project such as Peace Matunda, everything that you pay goes where you can see it. By cutting out the ‘middle man’ we can guarantee you as volunteers, that you pay a lower price and 100% goes to the children and sustainability of the school’s future.

Please be aware that this is not your entry visa. You will also need to pre-apply and pay for the entry visa in your home country or pay for this upon arrival at the airport in Tanzania (cost approx $150.00 for US citizens / $120.00 for British – please check with your country’s Tanzanian embassy as costs can vary).

Optional Extras:

All of these costs are optional but we recommend you consider these in advance as many will be beneficial to your stay here in Tanzania.

Transport / Pick-up (recommended): (O)

We will meet you personally upon arrival and at your choice of destination.

$100 for pick-up and drop off at Kilimanjaro Airport

$60 for pick-up and drop off at Arusha Airport

$40 for pick-up and drop off at Arusha bus station

Language and Culture Week (O)

A Language and Culture Week is offered for those who wish to start their stay in Tanzania with an introduction to Tanzanian culture and the Kiswahili language. During this week you will also learn about the Arusha region through excursions in the area.

This five-day package costs $100 in supplement to your volunteer programme 1st week fee.

9 hours of Kiswahili lessons

A Tanzanian cooking class

Excursion to Arusha city

Excursion to Tengeru local market

Excursion to Lake Duluti and Lodemi waterfalls

During these excursions you will get the chance to interact with the local village life and see first hand the ‘real Africa that’s ‘off the beaten track’. Food, accommodation and access to all our facilities are included in the Language and Culture Week.

We highly recommend this week, as it will help maximize your free time during your volunteer period. By the end of the week you’ll be your own guide to the surrounding areas and have the confidence to explore freely by yourself or with other volunteers for the rest of your stay.

Tanzania is another world to what you will be used to at home, especially the rural areas such as this. The aim of the language and cultural week is to offer you the best experience possible in the time that you’re here. Remember, we are a non-profit organisation and we want you to leave Tanzania with a smile! Therefore, every penny of your money is directly beneficial to the local community.

We welcome application from everyone.

Registration is made bycontacting the Volunteer Coordinator based here in Arusha who will then send you the application form to complete and return to us via email.

We endeavor to respond to your application within 10 working days. Within that period of time, we will get back to you if we need more information or simply to confirm your volunteer placement.

What Happens Next?

Once your volunteer placement has been confirmed, we will send you the orientation package in order for you to be able to prepare your trip. You will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit of $200 within two weeks of your placement being confirmed. The rest of the amount has to be paid at least 3 weeks before the programme starts.

Volunteer programmes start every Monday all year and last 1-12 weeks. Volunteers should arrive at Peace Matunda the weekend before their starting date (no charge for extra food or accommodation).

If you wish to stay longer than 12 weeks, please contact us.

How to Get Here

There are several ways of getting to Peace Matunda, which vary in price and comfort. Most international flight operators will stop at Kilimanjaro airport, about a 45-minute drive away from us. This can usually be with a short transfer of a few hours in Europe.

Alternatively, you can fly to Nairobi (capital of neighboring country Kenya), from there you can fly to Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport (closest). You can also take the bus from Nairobi to Arusha (~ 7 hours), and we will pick you up at the bus station in Arusha.

You can also fly to Dar es Salaam (capital of Tanzania), from there you can either take the bus to Arusha (~ 10 hours) or fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport. We will pick you up at the airport or bus station.

More detailed information on how to get to Arusha (such as suggestions of bus companies, airlines, hotels etc) will be provided in the orientation package.

Facilities

During your stay at Peace Matunda, you will have access to: Telephone for incoming calls, satellite TV, DVD-player, electricity, shower with hot water, toilet, washing machine (2$ per load), Internet (2$ per hour), clean drinking water, gated compound with 24 hour security.

Taking into consideration the rural environment in which Peace Matunda is situated, our facilities are very generous and well functioning. However, we ask volunteers to understand that Tanzania is a developing country and be prepared that we cannot guarantee a 100% efficiency at all times.

Orientation Package

All essential information about your trip will be provided through the orientation package that will be sent to you when we confirm your volunteer placement. This document will contain information such as basic facts about Tanzania and Arusha, packing list, vaccinations guidelines, weather descriptions, arrival/departure information, in-depth information about the life at the orphanage, visa procedure and everything else you need to know before coming to Tanzania. If you don’t receive this, please emailus by contacting the Project Coordinator.

If desired, we can put you in contact with other volunteers coming here should your times coincide.

Please note that we cannot provide you with travel insurance. This is an essential cost that needs to be covered by you if you wish to volunteer with us. More information can be found in the orientation package.

We hope that you decide to join us and look forward to having you to stay in Tanzania! Karibuni!
